How we test GPS trackers
Most GPS tracker reviews are spec sheets. Ours are the result of buying the device, installing it, driving with it for at least two weeks, and living with the app. Here is exactly how we do it.
1. Selection
We choose products based on real reader demand and what is actually selling, not on who pays us. We cover the trackers people search for: OBD plug-in, magnetic/covert, hardwired, “no monthly fee” options, and 4G real-time devices.
2. Purchasing & disclosure
Whenever possible, we buy devices from normal retail channels. If a manufacturer provides a sample, the review page says so. A sample never guarantees coverage and never influences the verdict.
3. Installation
We install every tracker in a real vehicle the way a normal buyer would: OBD trackers plug in, magnetic units are placed and hidden, hardwired units are wired with the included harness. We record how long installation takes and what could go wrong.
4. The two-week test
Each tracker is used for at least 14 days across real driving conditions: city parking garages, rural roads, long highway trips, and cold starts. During the test we check:
- Location accuracy and how often the position updates while moving and parked;
- App experience: speed, reliability, alerts, geofencing, route history;
- Battery life (battery-powered units) or consistent power (OBD/hardwired);
- Coverage issues and how quickly the tracker reconnects after signal loss;
- Customer support: we contact support with a real question and time the reply.
5. Scoring
Every review scores five weighted areas:
- Accuracy & updates (25%) — the core job;
- App & alerts (25%) — what you interact with daily;
- Total first-year cost (20%) — hardware + subscription, honestly calculated;
- Installation & hardware (15%) — build quality, ease of install, concealability where relevant;
- Support (15%) — how the company behaves when something breaks.
6. Total cost is the headline
A $40 tracker with a $20/month plan costs $280 in year one — more than a $150 tracker with a $10/month plan. Every review includes a “first-year total cost” line so you can compare honestly.
7. Updates
GPS trackers, prices and subscription plans change quickly. We re-verify price tables quarterly and date every update on the page. When a device is discontinued or a plan changes, we say so.
8. What we don’t test
We do not test, rate, or recommend devices for tracking another person’s vehicle without their knowledge. That use is illegal in many jurisdictions and we will not help anyone do it.
